With the Ozcars announced for 2014, it’s time to reveal the top 25 for each of the categories! You know the final 5 for each category but who just missed out on a finals placing? Who cracked the top 10? And who struggled to even make the top 20? Today we bring you the first set of our results with the top 25 heroes from the last 2 seasons of Blood vs Water and Cagayan!
For this category, it was a simple case of you voting for who you thought was the biggest ‘hero’ in the last 12 months of Survivor. The word ‘hero’ was subjective, as numerous contestants who were considered villains (and who also appear on the villains list) make the top 25. It makes for an interesting talking point as to what people consider a ‘hero’ and what people consider a ‘villain’. What do you think?
25. Jeremiah Wood (Cagayan) – 7 Votes
Jeremiah wasn’t the most visible player during Cagayan but he certainly was one nice guy. He was always aware of what was going on around him and he didn’t seem to piss anyone off along the way. For this he just sneaks into the top 25 new heroes for 2013/14.
24. Alexis Maxwell (Cagayan) – 7 Votes
An all around nice girl, Alexis was a passionate player who really wanted to go deep in the game. Unfortunately for her it wasn’t to be, and her vote out just before the merge was one of the most emotional of the last 12 months. A true hero though in all aspects.
23. Jefra Bland (Cagayan) – 10 Votes
Jefra had people smiling before the season even started, so there was no way she was going to leave Cagayan as anything but a hero. A likeable contestant, things turned against her after the LJ vote but she held her head high and attempted to stick around, but found herself on the jury.
22. Caleb Bankston (Blood vs. Water) – 10 Votes
Everyone wondered what sort of man would be with one of the most infamous Survivor villains of all time and whether or not he too would live up to being a bit of a bad guy. Turns out though that Caleb is one nice bloke, and a guy that perhaps we missed out on seeing a whole lot more on given his invisible edit. Unlucky not to make the top 20 here, but still worthy of a spot on the overall list.
21. Colton Cumbie (Blood vs. Water) – 11 Votes
Colton makes the final 5 villains list but also manages to get enough votes to make the top 25 heroes and even beat out his fiancé? An early talking point no doubt in this years Ozcars, but perhaps people are slowly starting to see past his reputation and see him for the nice guy he really is? Stranger things have happened in these awards!
20. Monica Culpepper (Blood vs. Water) – 12 Votes
A polarising character her second time around, Monica didn’t exactly resinate highly with the audience but did enough to make the top 20 of the best heroes list from the last 12 months. One of the nicest ladies you can expect to meet, Monica barely had a bad word to say about anybody during her time on Blood vs Water and is a worthy addition for the top 20.
19. Aras Baskauskas (Blood vs. Water) – 17 Votes
Aras has the personality for pretty much any person to like him and that showed a second time around during Blood vs Water. Making some strong strategic moves but still having people on his side, Aras was a shoe in for this list, although he might not be too pleased to learn of our next entrant on this list and the fact that he was beaten by him.
18. Vytas Baskauskas (Blood vs. Water) –19 Votes
That person is his brother Vytas, who scored an extra 2 votes than his brother to land on this list in 18th place. After recovering from such hardships in life, Vytas came out strong and seemed to connect with pretty much everyone on his tribe allowing him to not only go far, but also make an impact on this list.
17. John Cody (Blood vs. Water) – 20 Votes
Easy on the eye and easy to get to know, John definitely is a worthy hero and deserving of making the top 20. Coming into the game alongside his ‘hero’ of a wife Candice, John was in a tough spot early having to decide to sacrifice himself for his wife or not before eventually being blindsided a few votes later. Gave one hell of an interview on this show too a few months after the season had aired, and also up for a few other categories in the 2014 Ozcars. Not the last you’ll see of him on these lists in the coming days.
16. Tyson Apostol (Blood vs. Water) – 30 Votes
Considering he was a Villain on Heroes vs Villains some might be surprised at just how high he lands on this list. However it was a much different Tyson we saw in season 27 than we were used to, and finally he was able to play a game he had wanted to since his first outing on Tocantins. And when you have the personality and charm that Tyson has, it’s hard not to put him high on a hero list.
15. Trish Hegarty (Cagayan) – 32 Votes
Trish was a polarising contestant on Cagayan in the sense that one minute she was being nice and loyal, the next she was screaming and abusing a fellow contestant. Where is the line there for hero and villain? Well on this list, it makes her a hero in 15th place, knocking off some big names before her too.
14. J’Tia Taylor (Cagayan) – 32 Votes
J’Tia will go down as one of the most memorable early boots of all time and her actions around camp and in challenges certainly had many people talking during the early parts of Cagayan. And according to 32 of you, her actions were heroic enough to make the final 15 of this list. Don’t argue with this placement though, as your food just might end up in the fire…
13. Candice Cody (Blood vs. Water) – 32 Votes
A hero on Heroes vs Villains, Candice went into Blood vs Water automatically on the outs for many reasons and that turned her into a different Candice than to the one we had seen on two previous seasons. Beating her husband on this list will also no doubt hold strong for her, and we’re sure the ever competitive Candice would be disappointed not to crack the top 10. There are still plenty of other lists to get yet Mrs Cody!
12. Tony Vlachos (Cagayan) – 35 Votes
Considering Tony made the top 5 on the best new villain list, it might be a surprise to see him so high up on the heroes list as well. But one persons villain is another persons hero, and he narrowly misses out on the top 10 by a solitary vote. Any contestant who talks llama on a season deserves a high ranking on any list anyway, so I’m fine with this ranking. 100% fine.
11. Laura Morett (Blood vs. Water) – 35 Votes
Getting voted out by your own daughter sure has to leave a sting in your tail, and for Laura another sting comes in the form of narrowly missing out on the top 10 best heroes list for the last 12 months. If you want to know how much of a hero she is, ask Aras how good her massages are! Because by the looks of them, that has hero written all over it!
10. Laura Boneham (Blood vs. Water) – 36 Votes
Laura came out to play and managed to find herself in a difficult situation early on being voted out. But her husband soon stepped in to save her and gave Laura the chance to work her magic amongst the returning players! An all around nice lady, there is no way Laura wasn’t going to end up high on this list and deserves a spot in the top 10! I still think she was robbed of a finals spot, but I’ll just keep that opinion quiet!
9. Tina Wesson (Blood vs. Water) – 46 Votes
One of the nicest contestants in the history of the show, the first ever female winner of Survivor came back with a vengeance on her third go around and nearly pulled off a remarkable victory! Her never say die attitude won her a new legion of fans, and her loyal fan base that has been with her ever since the Australian Outback also left Blood vs Water with smiles on their faces! A hero through and through, probably should be higher but 9th is still a good effort!
8. Hayden Moss (Blood vs. Water) – 76 Votes
The first ever Big Brother player to play Survivor, Hayden shone his big pearly whites whenever he could and everyone loved him for it. A nice guy with a strong strategic edge, he was so close to greatness but just couldn’t get all his cards together when it counted. Surely will play again and get a chance to shine once more.
7. Katie Collins (Blood vs. Water) – 78 Votes
Do me a favour and name one bad thing about Katie. Name one! There is nothing bad to say against her except that it was bad we didn’t get to see more of her! She has proven on her appearances on Survivor Oz since Blood vs Water that she is funny and fun, so we were definitely robbed of more Katie time on our screens. But one thing I will say is that we were also perhaps robbed of her making the finals in this category! And yes, I will be saying that a lot during these articles in the coming days!
6. Ciera Eastin (Blood vs. Water) – 90 Votes
With only a day left of first round voting, Ciera was in the final 5 and looked set to make the final round. As a matter of fact she looked like possibly making the finals of both the best new hero AND new villain! But that final day of voting saw Ciera fans depart the internet, and she just missed out on making it to that final phase. The biggest thing I feel that voting showed though is the polarising aspect of her game. Was she heroic? Or was she villainous? Definitely a tough one to call, but probably an even tougher one to swallow that she failed to make the finals of either category!
5. Woo Hwang (Cagayan) – Final Voting Percent 11.15%
POSITION AFTER FIRST ROUND: 3rd (160 Votes)
Woo came into the finals sitting in the bronze medal position and seemed destined for a top 3 finish. However his fans deserted him when it came to the finals, and he dropped back to 5th place. An all around nice guy, there is no doubting that Woo is a deserving hero. But just like during the 28th season, it was a case of so close yet so far for him.
4. Rupert Boneham (Blood vs Water) – Final Voting Percent 13.39%
POSITION AFTER FIRST ROUND: 5th (91 Votes)
4th overall last year on the greatest heroes of all time list, 4th overall on the best heroes for the last 12 months! Rupert did manage to leap up a spot in the final round to take out 4th, but just like he did on All-Stars 4th isn’t exactly something to smile home about. Will we see him a 5th time? Who knows. If we do it might be his chance to finally claim that elusive first Ozcar.
3. LJ McKanas (Cagayan) – Final Voting Percent 17.22%
POSITION AFTER FIRST ROUND: 4th (153 Votes)
Another contestant to leap forward in the voting, LJ claims the bronze as the 3rd biggest heroic player from the last 12 months. A nice guy who perhaps we didn’t get to see as much as we should’ve, LJ will no doubt be pleased with the result in his first ever Ozcars. He also helps ensure that Cagayan take out the top 3 in this category.
2. Tasha Fox (Cagayan) – Final Voting Percent 25.24%
POSITION AFTER FIRST ROUND: 2nd (184 Votes)
Tasha was a dominant player in the latter half of the season and for a while it looked as though she was going to sneak through for the victory. However it wasn’t to be for Miss Fox and she takes the runner-up spot in the first Ozcar category for 2014. Well liked by pretty much everyone on her season, it’s a safe bet to assume she just might be seen on our screens again some time in the future. Maybe then she can walk way with a coveted Ozcar award!
1. Spencer Bledsoe (Cagayan) – Final Voting Percent 33.00%
POSITION AFTER FIRST ROUND: 1st (593 Votes)
One of the most one sided categories this year, Spencer was never in doubt to walk away as the biggest new hero from the last 12 months! Dominating the first round, Spencer was never headed in the finals and cruised to his first ever Ozcar victory! Ever humble in his win, Spencer gladly accepted the award live on the air during our awards ceremony! Congratulations to Spencer!
