For the 32nd season of Kaoh Rong we will be once again bringing you our weekly POWER RANKINGS as Ben & Noah are joined by Ozlets Colin & Jarrod to rank the contestants each week based on performance and strategy and where they are perceived to be in the game! We continue our rankings for another week with our episode 1 rankings, which we are sure will cause speculation and debate as we get closer to next weeks episode!
HOW THE RANKINGS ARE CALCULATED
Each week Ben, Noah, Colin & Jarrod will rank the remaining contestants based on their opinion of where they stand in the game, with the four totals being tallied to produce a total score. The lowest total score will be ranked at the top, with the second lowest in second, third lowest in third and so on and so forth. Each week the overall list will be published, separated into three tribes. It will combine into one list once the tribes merge (or two should there be a tribe dissolve).
Once again during Kaoh Rong we will be scoring who gets the closest each week with the POWER RANKINGS LEADERBOARD! The ranker who gets closest in predicting the previous weeks eliminated contestant will score a point. If they predict the exact finishing position then they will score 2 points. If there are two or more rankers on the same prediction/number, they will both get the said points amount. Here is the leaderboard after this weeks episode:
CHAN LOH (BRAINS) RANKINGS
1st – Neal
BEN RANK: 8th
NOAH RANK: 4th
COLIN RANK: 4th
JARROD RANK: 3rd
BEN: Well the Peter Harkey reference is gone and do we have Gotye instead? Interesting guy, and smart too.
NOAH: Neal seems to be one of the instigators of the four person brains alliance and so far has one of the bigger edits of the tribe. He is talking strategy and doesn’t seem to be annoying anyone. Neal should be good until at least a tribe swap.
COLIN: Despite the Brains tribe making a stronger first impression in episode one than the Cagayan predecessors did in any episode of their season, I still sense a gong show. Liz has potential, but Neal may be the only one with his head together enough to go deep in the game.
JARROD: On each tribe there seems to be one standout player who’s positioned themselves well amongst the tribe and in the brains group it would appear to be Neal. He’s tight with the younger crew and alongside Liz he picked out Joe and Debbie as the early targets.
2nd – Peter
BEN RANK: 3rd
NOAH RANK: 7th
COLIN RANK: 9th
JARROD RANK: 6th
BEN: Just like how I saw him pre-game. Smart, aware and sociable. Plus the Obama card has already come up. In it for the long haul.
NOAH: Not too much from Peter after week one but he got a decent amount of air time and is a part of the four person brains majority alliance. He will probably be kept around early on for strength.
COLIN: Maybe with the Obama mentions out of the way a character will develop here. He’s one of the least vulnerable people on his tribe. More screentime would help at this point.
JARROD: Peter is in the majority on the Brains tribe right now and he has the added bonus of bringing strength to a tribe filled with mainly mental prowess. He shouldn’t be headed anywhere for a long time.
3rd – Liz
BEN RANK: 9th
NOAH RANK: 3rd
COLIN RANK: 7th
JARROD RANK: 9th
BEN: Love Liz, she is amazing, beautiful and smart. She is going deep in this game for sure.
NOAH: Similar to Neal, Liz has received one of the larger first episode edits on brains tribe and is being set up as one of the bigger strategists. She is a part of the four person younger brains alliance and doesn’t seem to be having any issues so far. Next episode looks like she might start annoying people but we can’t give too much credence to often misleading previews.
COLIN: I have a feeling she would be on the right side of the votes if they went to tribal, and the Brains tribe this year is far from the disaster that we saw in Cagayan. She showed some social skills that others in the Brains may lack, which would help in the event of a tribe shuffle.
JARROD: Liz and Neal were set up as the strategic thinkers on the Brains tribe in the opening episode and she looks to be sitting solid within her alliance of four.
4th – Aubry
BEN RANK: 13th
NOAH RANK: 11th
COLIN RANK: 14th
JARROD RANK: 12th
BEN: Setting her up for an evacuation? Possibly. I hope not though, as she certainly seems like a great character to have in this game.
NOAH: Aubry is a part of the Brains alliance and redeemed herself with her challenge winning performance. However, completely losing it at camp may put a target on her back or doubts about her from her alliance. Aubry is probably fine for the time being but it could be an issue if her anxiety/dehydration becomes heightened.
COLIN: She was making some progress and then came her little meltdown. Plenty of times in the past people have lost it in the first few days and recovered nicely, but considering how little we have to judge a lot of these people on, I’d say she took a big hit this week.
JARROD: A whirlwind opening episode for Aubry saw her cement herself in a majority alliance only to suffer an emotional breakdown and then redeem herself by dominating in the immunity challenge. If she’s able to put the pressure of the game behind her for good she should be safe but if she suffers another panic attack she may be seen as a real liability.
5th – Joe
BEN RANK: 14th
NOAH RANK: 15th
COLIN RANK: 13th
JARROD RANK: 14th
BEN: Early target sadly but that was always going to be the case. If brains can keep winning he can form some alliances and stay around which would be great to see as he definitely seems mentally stable enough to go far. Just has to somehow get past the age perceptions.
NOAH: Same deal as Debbie. Joe’s age is making him stand out and even though he is working hard at camp, he isn’t in the four person alliance. He may be able to stick around if Debbie continues to annoy people then Joe could slide through but it isn’t looking good for him at this point.
COLIN: Although he has formed a bond with the clear outcast of the tribe in Debbie, his work ethic should endear him to the rest of the tribe. I mean who wouldn’t be impressed by a person of his age with the obvious strength he has. It will take a lot more than that to win, but if he can survive to the merge his target will all but disappear.
JARROD: In the opening episode and we only saw him bonding with Debbie and working hard around camp. He looks to be on the outs purely because of his age and it’ll take a significant turnaround to topple the younger four who look to be in control. It’s a real toss up between Joe and Debbie as to who will be the first brain to be voted out right not.
6th – Debbie
BEN RANK: 16th
NOAH RANK: 16th
COLIN RANK: 15th
JARROD RANK: 17th
BEN: Oh Debbie. Such a great character. Perhaps more Shirin than Coach, but still so fun to watch. Sadly though it looks like it will wear thin on her tribe pretty quickly.
NOAH: Debbie has already started to annoy people on the Brains tribe. She failed to make fire and isn’t a part of the four person Brains alliance. She or Joe will probably be the first gone if Brains lose a challenge.
COLIN: The first half of the episode set her up as a early boot, but a challenge win and erratic mood swings from Aubry may have saved her come the next vote. It is hard to ignore her slightly abrasive personality and lack of allies.
JARROD: Debbie is an awesome character and I truly hope she’s in the game for a long time but things are looking fairly bleak right now. Her strong personality and eagerness to lead is rubbing some people the wrong way already and despite some good gameplay when it came to the Aubry meltdown, it looks like it’s only a matter of time before she’s given the boot.
TO TANG (BRAWN) RANKINGS
1st – Scot
BEN RANK: 2nd
NOAH RANK: 2nd
COLIN RANK: 3rd
JARROD RANK: 5th
BEN: Surprise of the episode for me. For sure I thought he would be a typical ‘pro athlete player’ and just skulk into the background but the guy was in the thick of the action, was honest about his profession and nobody gave a shit. I can see him going far for sure.
NOAH: Scot did something different to other celebrity contestants and ‘outed’ himself almost immediately into the game. It seems to have worked as he doesn’t appear to have any major target on his back based on his personal life and he is probably viewed as now more trustworthy. He is a decision maker on the tribe, a part of the majority alliance and doesn’t seem to be annoying anyone. Still not entirely sure he can win the whole thing based on his background with money though.
COLIN: He’s another hard playing ex athlete. We all know how that usually turns out. Jason may be the bigger character so far, which is why I feel he should be ranked slightly higher, but control of the tribe could be in either Scot or Jason’s hands.
JARROD: Already down in numbers and with more expendable players it’s hard to see Scot being a target should Brawn head back to tribal council. His alliance with Jason and Jennifer looks to be the strongest group on the To Tang tribe right now and barring something unexpected like an idol play Scot looks set up to make it far in the game.
2nd – Jason
BEN RANK: 10th
NOAH RANK: 5th
COLIN RANK: 1st
JARROD RANK: 2nd
BEN: Probably gave him a bit more credit pre-game as he definitely overplayed his hand a lot this episode. Could still see him going far but he will easily rub a lot of people the wrong way.
NOAH: Jason is off to a pretty good start in the game being one the main decision makers on the tribe and in a majority alliance. On top of this he also received a fair amount of the air time and is being set up as a major character. The one big downside to Jason is he does seem to have an abrasive attitude, evident by refusing to even use Alecia’s name when referring to her. This could bite him in the back or create enemies for him.
COLIN: He would seem to be on top of the Brawn tribe with multiple alliances and a hardcore game oriented personality. His type of character either goes early or goes all the way, so despite losing a tribe member this week, and keeping another one around that he clearly can’t trust, I see a ruthlessness and resourcefulness that’s needed to go deep in the game.
JARROD: Jason impressively made himself the centre of To Tang in the opening episode, forming a solid 3 person alliance with Scot and Jennifer and making a side deal with Cydney. While it feels like Scot is the “leader” of the brawn tribe, Jason seems to be the real player in control. He’s playing a smooth calculated game at this point in time and it’s hard to see him losing his footing anytime soon.
3rd – Jennifer
BEN RANK: 12th
NOAH RANK: 6th
COLIN RANK: 5th
JARROD RANK: 8th
BEN: That bug! That bug! So hard to watch. But it was interesting to see all the same. Other than that what did we get from her? Sadly not a whole lot, but would like to see more.
NOAH: Jenny’s game could have ended disastrously had the worm stayed in her ear but luckily she had a fast recovery. She is in the majority alliance on Brawns and seems to be up there with Jason and Scot as the main three of the tribe. Providing she doesn’t get injured again, Jenny should be able to make at least a tribe swap.
COLIN: I have high hopes for her despite the bug attack that almost had her as the earliest medevac in Survivor history. If she can build herself some makeshift ear plugs she has a chance at sticking around for a while!
JARROD: While undoubtedly painful, the bug incident proved her inner strength to the tribe and that fight seemed to resonate with the males of the tribe. Tight with Scot and Jason so I can’t see her in trouble for a while yet.
4th – Cydney
BEN RANK: 11th
NOAH RANK: 12th
COLIN RANK: 10th
JARROD RANK: 13th
BEN: Found herself tight with people early on but losing Darnell could hurt her as she lost an ally that she could’ve used later on. Still think she is in a better position now than I gave her credit for pre-game.
NOAH: Cydney is in a decent position being in the majority Brawn alliance. However she did lose a close ally in Darnell and appears to be the fourth member of the alliance of Jason, Scot and Jennifer. Cydney is probably fine until a swap but if Brawn continue to lose she could be in trouble.
COLIN: She’s easily the least likely to be targeted based on physical performance, but this is the brawn tribe, so physical game isn’t as valuable as it would be in another season. She’s tight enough with the power players, but at this point there isn’t enough footage to suggest she holds any real power herself. I have high hopes if she can make something happen.
JARROD: Cydney isn’t in a terrible position on the brawn tribe but she lost her closest ally last tribal council which suggests she doesn’t have a whole lot of sway in the voting decisions of the tribe. An undisputed physical force in challenges it’ll be interesting to see how her body handles the tough conditions and how long her alter ego Storm can stay at bay.
5th – Alecia
BEN RANK: 15th
NOAH RANK: 17th
COLIN RANK: 17th
JARROD RANK: 15th
BEN: Well what was that? Somehow she survived, but barely. She is on very thin ice and will for sure be gone if brawn lose next.
NOAH: Alecia was lucky to survive this first vote out. She didn’t contribute at camp or in the challenge and Jason refuses to even use her name. She has no alliance on the Brawn tribe and is done for if they lose another challenge.
COLIN: I was hesitant to put her all the way at the bottom, as I have a feeling that she was saved for reasons that we weren’t shown on screen, but based on what we did see, she’s as clear choice for the bottom as we’ve had in many seasons.
JARROD: Miraculous that she survived the vote out on the brawn tribe but should To Tang head to tribal council again I don’t know if she’ll be quite as lucky. It’s clear neither of the girls particularly like her and so far she hasn’t pulled her weight around camp or in the challenges. Her mental game may be giant but so is the target on her back.
GONDOL (BEAUTY) RANKINGS
1st – Anna
BEN RANK: 1st
NOAH RANK: 1st
COLIN RANK: 2nd
JARROD RANK: 1st
BEN: Played a solid first episode. Was game savvy, aware and tried to make alliances. Isn’t going anywhere anytime soon.
NOAH: Anna received the equal most amount of confessionals in the first episode along with Tai. She is already being set up as a major strategist and character. She helped instigate and alliance with Julia and Michele and is building bonds with the three guys. I suspect after this first week performance, Anna will be sticking around in the game for a while.
COLIN: She seemed to win the power struggle over the tribe’s men vs women alliances when she won over Tai, but he’s a shaky ally at best, so as far as I’m concerned it still remains to be seen who comes out on top. I wouldn’t feel comfortable ranking either anyone from this tribe right at the top for now.
JARROD: Anna was quick to seize the opportunity to bring the girls together on the Beauty tribe and it looks like she’ll have a whole lot of sway over who gets the boot should Gondol head to tribal council. Alongside her group of girls the whole tribe is aligned against Tai right now with Anna seemingly calling the shots at this stage.
2nd – Julia
BEN RANK: 7th
NOAH RANK: 9th
COLIN RANK: 6th
JARROD RANK: 4th
BEN: The age wasn’t even mentioned once and she is in a tight alliance of five. She is good for a while.
NOAH: Julia is a part of the three women alliance on Beauty which has received the most attention so far. The only reason she is below the other two girls is because she received less airtime.
COLIN: She may be in the majority on her tribe, she may not. It will take a loss to see where Tai will fall in the tribe. Julia had a decent character setup which leads me to believe she can survive for a few episodes even if things don’t go her way.
JARROD: The apparent second in command of the Gondol girl’s alliance, there’s no sign of her youthfulness hindering her at this stage of the game. Quickly identified Caleb as a former Big Brother player and was able to build trust by revealing that information to Anna. Did well under pressure solving the puzzle in the immunity challenge as well.
3rd – Michele
BEN RANK: 5th
NOAH RANK: 8th
COLIN RANK: 8th
JARROD RANK: 7th
BEN: Another surprise as she went from someone I thought could be quite bland to actually being fairly interesting. Will be there for a while.
NOAH: Michele is a part of the women’s alliance on Beauty. She didn’t receive the most air time but is still being shown as a potential player heading forward in the game.
COLIN: See my opinion on Julia, minus the part about a good character setup.
JARROD: Probably the quietest of the Beauty girls flying under the radar is not a bad thing for Michele at this stage of the game. She’s locked into a sub alliance of three and she’s not ruffling any feathers right now.
4th – Caleb
BEN RANK: 6th
NOAH RANK: 10th
COLIN RANK: 11th
JARROD RANK: 10th
BEN: Not perhaps the ‘bro’ I thought he would be, seems to have a bit of game and seems to be well liked.
NOAH: Caleb wasn’t shown to be a part of any alliance but it looks as if the women would be willing to have him on as a number four, stating that he was very loyal in Big Brother. It also seemed like he was bonding with Nick and next week with Tai. They will probably want him around for strength too.
COLIN: The women on the Beauty tribe are far more solid than the men. His best move is to step away from Nick and throw Tai under the bus, becoming the lone male member of the tribe.
JARROD: Caleb was impressive during the initial marooning and he established himself as a work horse around camp. Coming clear about his past on Big Brother was a good idea and he seems to be sitting in a fairly good position amongst the Beauty tribe.
5th – Nick
BEN RANK: 4th
NOAH RANK: 13th
COLIN RANK: 12th
JARROD RANK: 11th
BEN: Sadly didn’t see as much of him as I hoped but the beauty tribe I feel is the best connected so far and only really has one person on the outs and the rest are tight. This will help them come a switch and come a merge if they can stay together.
NOAH: Nick hasn’t done anything wrong so far but we haven’t seen anything from him yet in regards to alliance or strategy. The emphasis has been on the women alliance and Tai and Caleb, with Nick being a background character for the time being. He will probably be kept around for strength but so far, not much to see here.
COLIN: I’m almost getting the meathead becomes an early boot vibe (i.e. Culpepper, Garrett, Rocker) but for now he’s building connections and keeping himself out of the spotlight as best as he can.
JARROD: Nick may have been in trouble had the girls grouped together with Tai but as of right now it looks like he’s safe in a solid five. Not at the top of the tribe but not at the very bottom either.
6th – Tai
BEN RANK: 17th
NOAH RANK: 14th
COLIN RANK: 16th
JARROD RANK: 16th
BEN: Tai came and Tai delivered. So great to watch and will bring oodles of entertainment each episode. Sadly though he is a lone horse on a tribe with an alliance of five. Beauty lose, he is gone.
NOAH: Tai is a workhorse at camp and was beginning to look good until he was caught looking for the idol. He was almost a number four in the female trio alliance but has now lost his spot. Tai could be in a lot of trouble if Beauty loses a challenge.
COLIN: He put a huge target on his back by openly looking for the idol so soon. Even in the most strategy heavy season that can be a death sentence on day one. This season has started very different in that many seem to be more work ethic/ challenge performance based.
JARROD: For most of the premiere things were looking peachy for Tai but his idol hinting has sown the seeds of mistrust amongst his beauty tribemates and he now finds himself on the outs. Fortunately, the Beauty tribe looks like a well rounded bunch and Tai has held his own in the challenges and camp life so far. Here’s hoping he can rebuild trust or Gondol can win out till a swap/merge.
